Scenes from Te Anaroa Cave Tour 1 & 2 are shown above. On the Rebecca Cave Adventure,
first you do Te Anaroa Cave Tour 1 - and then the adventure begins...

Down you go...

Gently abseiling down about 8 metres to the floor of Rebecca Cave.

It's really quite easy - but when you tell people you abseiled into a cave, they'll definitely be very impressed.

Why is Rebecca Cave different to Te Anaroa Cave?

Te Anaroa Cave is an ancient cave with fossils, stalactites and stalagmites.

Rebecca Cave is a modern-day "living" cave. That means water flows through it and - instead of finding fossils - the creatures in Rebecca Cave are alive and well...

You'll see masses of Glow Worms...

Glow Worms are fascinating little creatures which use their light to attract insects to eat.

When the Glow Worm gets older, it will use its light to attract a mate.

When Glow Worms are hungry, their light glows brighter. You can see which ones have eaten more recently in the photos on the left and below.

Also, notice how the Glow Worms are spaced apart fairly evenly...

They do that for safety reasons.

Apparently, one of the things they love to eat is other Glow Worms!

You may be lucky enough to spot our tiny ancient friend, the Cave Weta.

There are about 70 different species of Weta in New Zealand. Cave Wetas are the cute little ones that rarely venture beyond their dark hiding places.

(The Cave Weta seen on the left is shown much bigger than life size).

Cave Wetas are harmless and shy insects and they have probably been around since before the dinosaurs.

Eventually you emerge from Rebecca Cave into a sheltered pocket of native bush, feeling invigorated by your time underground in such a majestic and awe-inspiring place.

Driving Directions:
Driving from Collingwood towards the start of the Heaohy Track, head along the Collingwood-Bainham Main Road for about 8.6km, then turn left into Devils Boots Road at Rockville corner.

Drive about 650 metres along Devils Boots Road, then take the left fork at the Devils Boots turnoff.

Te Anaroa Cave Tour car park is signposted on the left about 100 metres after the Devils Boots turnoff.

See you there!
