Paul de Jager

Contemporary Indigenous
New Zealand Claywork

Contemporary Artifacts in Clay

Paul de Jager has lived in remote and mineral rich Golden Bay for the last twenty years. His recent works abandon glaze and instead use clays and ochres obtained from his local surroundings. The hand-built forms are developed over several days with layers of ochre worked into the clay or incised in patterns derived from Pacific tattoo and tapa cloth, then hand-burnished to provide surface and colour.
